V pasaulinėse neolimpinių sporto šakų žaidynėse, surengtose 1997 m. Suomijoje, dalyvavo daugiau kaip 2000 sportininkų iš 75 šalių, jie rungėsi dėl 24 apdovanojimų komplektų. Pirmą kartą pasaulinėse neolimpinių sporto šakų žaidynėse dalyvavo ir 8 sportininkai iš Lietuvos: kultūristai, sportinių šokių atstovai ir akrobatai.
